How Does a Stock Exchange Make Money

The floor of the New York Stock Exchange

The New York Stock Exchange and its German equivalent, the Deutsche Börse, announced a merger on Tuesday. The deal values the parent company of the former at $10 billion, but the Associated Press notes that “despite its fame and its fabled floor, [the NYSE] is a lousy way to make money.” How does the exchange bring in revenue, anyway?

Fees. For most of its history—which dates back to 1792—the NYSE expected traders to buy and sell stocks in its Wall Street building. They paid for the right to do business there. Although most trading now occurs electronically, the NYSE is still essentially a venue for financial transactions. If a company wants to be listed on the exchange (thus allowing traders to buy and sell its stock through the NYSE), it must pay yearly fees of up to $250,000. When traders move stock, they pay a tiny fee per 100 shares. The trading of futures, options, and other derivatives also requires a fee.

Levying fees for stock transactions isn’t a high-margin business. According to the Associated Press, the exchange makes just three-hundredths of a penny for every 100-stock order. To make matters worse, trade volume at the NYSE has fallen dramatically in recent years due to competition wrought by technology. There used to be comparatively few places to trade, but today there are lots of electronic venues (Bats Global Markets, Getco, and Direct Edge, among others). *

Industry watchers believe that NYSE and Deutsche Börse are merging at least in part to consolidate control over futures markets. Any exchange that handles futures—like both NYSE and Deutsche Börse—must own “clearing houses” responsible for accepting deposits from brokers to cover their balances and making sure all contracts are fulfilled. (For more information on clearing houses, click here.) That makes futures trading a more complicated business for an exchange—and thus a less competitive and more lucrative one. In the fourth quarter of 2010, revenue from derivatives accounted for 33 percent of the total for the NYSE, up from 29 percent in the same quarter the year before.

In addition to charging fees for trades (of stocks or futures) and for the privilege of being listed Missoni Dresses, the NYSE sells data—who sold what, when, for how much—to financial researchers and news companies. It also increasingly makes money by selling trading software to money managers and allowing big-deal firms to install their computers closer to the actual exchange, so their electronic trade requests will arrive milliseconds earlier than competitors’.

How To Create A Consistent Style From Wedding Cere

On April 1st, I made an appearance at the “Unveiled Bridal Style Revealed” event in Beverly Hills, Calif., held at the exquisite Beverly Canon Gardens. “Unveiled” is an outdoor bridal event that brings together the best event professionals Windows 7 Key, resources, and designs for couples to enjoy as they plan for their big day.

I am not married nor am I engaged. Thus, I can only imagine what it must feel like for newly betrothed couples when the engagement haze wears off, and the reality of creating a wedding becomes, well… real. Venues, food, guests, invitations… the details and decisions are seemingly endless. Bridal events, like “Unveiled,” are an invaluable resource for couples. They are like the Barneys New York women’s shoe department of weddings: the best the industry has to offer Windows Vista Key, in one place, and with smiling, friendly people waiting to chat and help!

My team and I were on-site to talk with brides about all things wedding fashion and style including: upcoming trends Exchange Server Key, choosing your wedding gown, choosing bridesmaids dresses to compliment every personality and figure, how to style your groom and groomsmen, and much more.

One bride in particular asked my advice on how to wear different ceremony and reception dresses, while maintaining a consistent style. My conversation with said bride inspired this article because I know she is not the only woman grappling how to wear two different dresses, while maintaining one overall look. So, let’s talk it out…

If you decide to change between the ceremony and the reception, both dresses together should tell a story and create a cohesive look that reflects your personality and overall wedding theme. This can be done in the following ways:

Create a color story.

Your wedding colors will be apparent throughout the details of the décor: flowers, linens, centerpieces, etc. Incorporate your wedding colors throughout your wardrobe changes to create a look that is consistent. For example, add pops of your wedding color to your ceremony dress through a sash/belt, headpiece, shoes, jewelry, or even with the flowers in your bouquet. Continue this color story by choosing a cocktail dress in your wedding color for your reception. Even if you are not in white, every one will still know you are the bride.

Your personal style.

Stay true to your personal style and taste when selecting both the ceremony and reception dresses. Your individual style will tie both looks together in and of itself. For example, if you are a fan of old Hollywood glamour (a la Grace Kelly, Audrey Hepburn, or Ingrid Berman), choose dresses that are inspired by this era. For the ceremony, wear a ball gown in satin, with a full skirt, lace appliqué, and long or cap sleeves. For the reception, choose a satin sheath dress with a deep V neckline and beaded detailing. When both dresses reflect your personal style, the wardrobe changes will flow together seamlessly.

Include your culture in both looks.

Couples may choose to have a wedding ceremony in their families’ culture in which a very specific type of wedding garb is required. Hindu brides wear a sari in luxurious red silk with gold embroidery, while Korean brides wear a hanbok, a traditional dress in vibrant colors with curved, simple lines created by the abundance of material. If you choose to honor your culture by wearing traditional ceremony attire, carry this theme through to your reception dress.

If you change into a traditional western wedding dress for the reception, incorporate elements of your cultural costume. For example, Hindu brides could leave on the splendid gold jewelry worn with the sari, use accessories to add pops of red or gold, or even wear a red or gold cocktail dress. Incorporating your culture’s auspicious color into your reception dress is a great way to keep your culture included throughout the whole event.

Fabrics and beading.

If your wedding ceremony is a grand display of pomp and circumstance and you dream of wearing a formal ball gown, take this opportunity to wear a gown and accessories that are elegant and extravagant. In order to continue this glamorous look into your reception, bring the most exquisite elements from your formal gown into your next dress. For example, if your ceremony gown is adorned with intricate, heavy beadwork, look for a reception dress in a modern, sheath silhouette with beaded cap sleeves, sash/belt, or neckline that will hint at the opulence of your formal gown, but be more conducive to dancing the night away.

Two for one.

Some designers are creating dresses that are made to satisfy two looks. The full skirt can be removed to reveal a short, cocktail dress underneath, the long sleeves can be removed to reveal sexy, off the shoulder straps, or simply removing a bolero to reveal a strapless, sweetheart neckline. By wearing a dress with one or all of these elements, your transition from ceremony to reception is automatically cohesive since the main body of your dress is the same.

Changing dresses is a relatively new trend, so you are not confined to a specific set of fashion rules or expectations. Therefore, you can take advantage of this opportunity to be creative with your dress choices and use them as an opportunity to surprise and wow your guests, and most of all, your new partner.

And remember, you do not have to change at all. If you find your dream dress, wear it through the entire day and night… and into the next day! Why take it off?

Give the Best Mother’s Day Gift Ever A Real Sprin

Think you’ve got this Mother’s Day all wrapped and ready? Maybe you’ve already gotten a gift, ordered her flowers, or made your food list for the annual breakfast-in-bed. Allow me to commend you on the achievement. However, I’d like to suggest that you add to your list doing one of the most impactful things you can do for her: clean up her air space. Why? Because the air your one-and-only Mom is breathing right now could be toxic.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), indoor air quality (IAQ) is actually a pressing national concern. There are plenty of toxins that are pent-up inside of buildings and homes. According to the International Society of Indoor Air Pollution’s 15-year study, women who stay at home or work from home have a 54 percent HIGHER risk of dying of cancer than women who work outside the home.[1] (As a woman who works from her house, that’s a really frightening statistic!)

There are all kinds of hidden toxins in our household air, from chemical solvents to formaldehyde. There are the pollutants we bring in through products we buy like furniture and cleaners, and toxins emitted from things we use like kitchen equipment, paints, indoor grills, and even wood burning stoves. It’s amazing how many things turn out to be invisible pollutants. Do these toxins escape? Settle? Get absorbed? It’s hard to know what their true impact is. But lately replica watches, it seems I read an article daily on the importance of understanding how chemicals we interact with regularly affect us.

It is with this information in mind that I suggest one of the most generous, loving replica watches, powerful and kind things you can do for the mom in your life: Make it an annual practice to clean up her air space and establish healthier home habits this and every Mother’s Day going forward. These are habits to maintain every single day of the year from here on out. (The really good news is that this effort will pay dividends for everyone in your family, not just Mom.) She may even feel a difference immediately, as the effect of cleaning up her air space can be immediate.

The bottom line is that our homes need to become healthy-air oases. By conducting a health check-up this (and every) Mother’s Day we can help our moms, ourselves, and all of our loved ones breathe easier. All you have to do is follow my easy tips below to have fresh air impact:

Open the windows wide. This one doesn’t cost a thing. According to the EPA, people are estimated to spend about 90 percent of their time indoors but that indoor air quality can be two to five times more polluted than outdoor air. Plus, fresh air is known to lift your spirits.

Give her flowers, yes, but make sure they’re potted plants as opposed to cut stems. Plants naturally help to clean and purify the air. (Ideally replica watches, buy a hardy plant like the peace lily or Boston fern that are on the NASA list to improve air quality.) Plants are Mother Nature’s way of keeping the air fresh. Place them in the rooms she’s in most often.

Get down on your hands and knees and clean out underneath her kitchen sink. There are likely tons of toxins in there, according to the Environmental Working Group. Get rid of the most toxic cleaners from the Environmental Working Group’s hall of shame.

Replace her cleaning products. What says I love you more than a bucket ‘o cleaning products that are made from natural materials? Try Seventh Generation, but be sure to read the labels and inform yourself on what’s getting used in your home. (Also, open those windows while anyone cleans.)

Don’t stop here. Learn more about your indoor air quality and what you other steps you can take to make it better from the American Lung Association.

Do this for extra credit while you’re at it and sign the petition to enact a law requiring transparent GMO labeling on foods. This would be a step toward making the task of shopping easier and healthier too!

This Mother’s Day, do something that’s going to have real, lasting impact on her world: a spring cleaning to make her air space healthier.

New York – Six months after the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey raised prices at its six bridges and tunnels, the numbers are in: about a half million fewer drivers per month are using them. That’s a 5 percent decrease overall.

The drop in vehicle usage is to be expected, especially given that four months after prices went up at the crossings The Best Tattoo Machine, tolls jumped by 50 percent on the New Jersey Turnpike and Garden State Parkway. That’s a double toll hike whammy on Jersey drivers making a typical trip to Manhattan or Staten Island.

John Edwards’ Hair Style Goes From $400 Salon to

YouTube

Not one hair on former senator John Edwards’ head has escaped his precipitous fall from political grace.

The lush brown locks that four years ago were getting the star treatment from a $400-per-cut Beverly Hills hairdresser are now being snipped and styled for a mere $12.95 by his local Supercuts, the New York Post reports.

Leah, a hairdresser at the Raleigh Rotary Tattoo Gun, N.C., Supercuts that is mere miles from Edward’s Chapel Hill house, told the Post when Edwards’ came in there was no fanfare for the 2008 presidential candidate.

“We just talked about his hair,” she told the Post.

When ABC News called to confirm the story, Leah’s Supercuts colleague Nikki said she has “never” seen Edwards in the salon. Leah was not available for comment.

But Edwards, it seems, is making the Supercuts rounds. About two months ago he stopped in one of the salon’s Chapel Hill locations so his son could get his ‘do done, Greg, a hairdresser at that location confirmed. While the former senator did not opt for a cut, his son splurged on a $10.95 ‘do. That was the first and last time Edwards’ came in the Chapel Hill Supercuts, Greg said.

The story of Edwards’ outrageously expensive haircuts, which exploded during his 2008 bid for the Democratic presidential nomination Tattoo Supplies, is a cautionary tale that seems to have lived on into the current campaign.

Former GOP candidate Rick Perry, who earned the nickname “Governor Goodhair,” was quick to inform reporters that he only pays $25 for to snip his thick, dark locks.

“Twenty-five dollars Cheap Tattoo Kits, good hair cutter,” the Texas governor told reporters while stopping at a barbershop along the campaign trail in January.

While walking into a Supercuts is a far cry from flying a high-end hairdresser across the country for a custom cut, the discount salon may seem like a luxury for Edwards, who could spend the next 30 years sheering his shag from behind bars.

The former senator will appear in court starting Monday for his closely-watched criminal trial, which will determine if he is guilty of six felony charges for allegedly soliciting illegal campaign contributions and using them to cover up his extramarital affair with Rielle Hunter, who was pregnant with his son during Edwards’ 2008 presidential campaign.

Instead of Taxing Home Improvement the Government

Over the past few weeks the government’s flagship energy efficiency policy, the Green Deal, has lurched from one setback to the next. On the one side is the Tea Party tendency in the Tory Party – those Tory MPs who don’t believe in climate change, or don’t think it’s worth bothering about. For them, attacking the Green Deal is just another way of undermining efforts to cut our carbon emissions and proves how out of touch they are with families struggling with soaring energy bills.

On the other side are ministers responsible for the Green Deal, who are just as out of touch with ordinary families affected by the cost of living crisis, and don’t seem to understand that unless serious improvements are made to the scheme, the public just won’t want to take it up. They dismiss anyone who wants to improve the Green Deal, to make it a better deal for the public, as talking down the scheme – when in reality, of course, exactly the opposite is true. The real champions of the Green Deal are those of us who are trying to improve it and make it a good deal.

Labour wants the Green Deal to succeed. We had a pay-as-you-save scheme in our manifesto, and it was the last Labour government who initiated pilot programmes to test the scheme. If done properly, a pay-as-you-save energy efficiency scheme could create jobs, lower bills for families and cut carbon emissions.

Instead of trying to force it on to the public, ministers should focus on improving the Green Deal to make it as attractive as possible, delivers savings for hard-pressed bill payers and offers real incentives so millions of people want to take it up.

And it’s not just Labour saying this. In recent months the CBI, Which?, the Federation of Masters Builders, the Construction Products Association, Green Alliance and even the Government’s own advisors, the Committee on Climate Change, have warned the Green Deal will fail without significant improvements. Unfortunately, right now it seems that the government isn’t in the mood to listen.

Climate Change Minister Greg Barker dismisses anyone who raises concerns as scaremongers. But the reality is that however good the Green Deal looks on paper, the current proposals aren’t up to delivering in practice. Changes need to be made. The government should take its head out of the sand, listen to these voices and work with all of us to ensure the scheme delivers the positive outcome we all want to see.

Most importantly consumers need to be offered affordable rates of interest on Green Deal loans. This is absolutely crucial to making the scheme a success. Polling conducted by the Great British Refurb Campaign found that only 7% of homeowners would be interested in taking up the Green Deal if the interest rate is 6% or above.

Yet worryingly a report by environmental think tank E3G says that relying on commercial loans – as the government plans – will mean interest rates as high as 8%. While modelling by London-based home improvement firm, Crystal shows that even with a 5% interest rate, measures taken out under the Green Deal would cost twice as much over the lifetime of a plan, compares with paying for them upfront.

Finance at these kinds of rates won’t be attractive to most people Buy DKNY Dresses, limiting demand and leaving the Green Deal struggling to get off the ground.

One solution is the Green Investment Bank. The government announced last year that one of the priorities for the Bank is to provide support for the Green Deal, but they haven’t specified what form that will take. It’s vital that any capital made available is used to secure affordable, attractive interest rates for consumers, in order to lower the cost of Green Deal packages.

Also small businesses should be allowed to complete with bigger companies on a level playing field.

Labour’s vision for the Green Deal is one where small businesses, co-operatives, local authorities, charities and social enterprises are able to compete alongside the big six and other large companies that want to take part in the scheme.

The proposals in the government’s consultation currently restrict full access to the Energy Company Obligation (ECO), which will provide subsidy for energy efficiency measures, to the Big Six energy companies.

These proposals not only limit smaller providers from competing on a level playing field across the whole Green Deal market, they also further entrench the dominance of the big six in our energy market. Labour wants to see the Green Deal open to all types and sizes of providers by allowing equal access to the ECO.

And lastly, extra support for the fuel poor.

While under the last Labour government the number of houses in fuel poverty fell by one million between 1996 and 2009 Discount Herve Leger v neck, soaring energy prices since, means more people are at risk of being fuel poverty. Yet despite this the government plans to offer three times as much support to households who can afford to improve their homes than to help those in fuel poverty.

Nick Clegg announced in a recent speech that the government was adopting Labour’s proposal to expand the ECO to include homes with hard to treat cavity walls and that the government was considering ‘ways to provide more targeted support for the lowest income homes’. A figure of an extra £190 million for this was touted in his speech, but no specifics were confirmed. The ECO is crucial to the success of the Green Deal and ministers urgently need to finalise its design.

Labour believes the funding from the ECO should be split equally between fuel poor homes and hard to treat homes, with a focus on low income hard to treat homes, over able to pay households. This would drive carbon reduction while ensuring that we put those who need help most, first.

With time running out until the Green Deal launches, the government needs to end the uncertainty, stop the infighting and focus instead on developing a credible way to deliver new jobs and lower energy bills.

REPORTGM to show Chevy Orlando-based GMC Granite a

GMC Granite will share a platform with the 2011 Chevrolet Orlando shown above

It seems as though it’s just about impossible to keep an embargo in place these days. A Canadian outlet just spilled the beans on a couple of GM reveals set for Detroit next month. They say they were invited to a sneak preview Wednesday evening and although they couldn’t take pics, they felt free to tell us about the whole array of models. Some have been loosely-guarded secrets Tattoo Supplies, but a couple are unknowns, so we’ll quote CanadianDriver on those until we get confirmation from GM.

Apparently, The General will have a slew of new model introductions in the D next month, including the much-anticipated Camaro Convertible, the new Tattoo Supplies, upsized Aveo, a substantially-revised Malibu, production versions of the Spark and Orlando, and two models we hadn’t heard about until now: A GMC version of the Orlando dubbed the Granite, and a “sport version of the Buick Regal” that should get “many of its performance parts from the 325-hp Opel Insignia OPC.” Hot dog, the Regal GS is apparently more than a wet dream. Bring on the Stage 1 and GNX.

The Regal was just introduced in Los Angeles a couple of weeks ago, so the announcement of a performance model so soon thereafter seems a little strange — not that we’re complaining, mind you. The Granite is described as an “urban utility vehicle” and will be the smallest model in GMC’s history. A Denali edition can only be around the corner. We’ll get you more details as they are released and we’ll be sure to have the whole field covered when the Big Top opens at Cobo in January.

Ferrari chief reportedly admits V6 a possibility

Purists who’ve given up hope with Porsche amidst their sedan and SUV shenanigans aren’t going to like this one bit. After all but completely phasing out even the option of a manual transmission in Ferrari road cars (in favor of robotized sequentials and dual-clutch gearboxes), Ferrari’s management says it can’t rule out the possibility of a V6 in the near future.

The quote comes from Ferrari’s chief executive Amadeo Felisa Cheap BCBG Dresses, who said that while the prospect would have been entirely dismissed as recently as a year ago Cheap Herve Leger v neck, today’s climate – in terms of the environment and customer conscience – precludes its being ruled out now. The last time Ferrari built a V6 (also used in Fiats and Lancias) was with the Dino 246 (pictured above) that went out of production in over a quarter century ago. The Dino is Cheap Christian Audigier Clothes, however, fondly remembered as a classic Buy Hale Bob Dresses, despite its relatively small engine.

Ford fears add complexity to Jag and Land Rover bi

Those of us outside of Ford have little idea about what Ford is really planning to do with its remaining PAG brands, Jaguar, Land Rover Cheap DKNY Clothes, and Volvo. If nothing else Replica Herve Leger v neck, it does seems clear that Ford wants to get rid of Jaguar and Land Rover at something above fire sale prices Cheap BCBG Dresses, and it would like to keep Volvo if it can find the money and concentration to run it properly. When it comes to Jag and Rover, the surprising revelation is that even the companies bidding for the British marques have little idea about what they’re getting.

Names of potential bidders continue to bob up, the latest being American equity firms TPG and Ripplewood Holdings. But Ford hasn’t given any of the bidders a complete financial picture of Jaguar and Land Rover Buy Bandage dresses, nor have any of the bidders even been allowed to visit the factories or speak to senior management. Potential buyers have also been told not to bid if they plan on closing factories or moving production out of Britain. We can’t help but think these are odd constraints to place on such a potentially large transaction — up to $8 billion, according to some estimates. Bidders are being asked to stump up for two companies they know little about Cheap DKNY Dresses, including one that has lost a fortune Discount Herve Leger v neck, and that they cannot change them in drastic ways to render them profitable.

Ford is ostensibly worried about damage to its reputation if it relinquishes the two hallowed names to slash-and-burn overseers. Ford is the number one selling brand in Britain, and doesn’t want residual anger over its treatment of Jag and Land Rover to affect its position. If this sale is a 15-round fight, we’re only in Round 3 — and it look like it’s going to be a long, fascinating match all the way to the end.

Osama Bin Laden

In a world where every form of splatter, dismemberment, and slaughter has found a home on the Web—a place in which tens, perhaps hundreds, of millions have watched blood bubble out of Neda Salehi Agha Soltan’s face and pool on the asphalt beneath her head—it seems nuts that President Barack Obama has decided not to release the photos of Osama Bin Laden’s bullet-dented cranium. *

In a 60 Minutesinterview to be aired Sunday, Obama said he thought it important that “very graphic photos of somebody who was shot in the head are not floating around as an incitement to additional violence or as a propaganda tool.”

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney spoke yesterday about the “sensitivities involved” in releasing the “gruesome” and potentially “inflammatory” photos Replica U Boat Watches, and mused about whether allowing their publication would “serve or in any way harm our interests” at home and abroad. Today, he said the administration didn’t want the photos to become “icons” that would help rally support against the United States.

Rep. Mike Rogers Imitation Burberry Watches, R-Mich., the chairman of the House Intelligence panel, opposes making the photos public for similar reasons, saying he doesn’t want the images to “make the job of our troops serving in places like Iraq and Afghanistan any harder than it already is. The risks of release outweigh the benefits.”

Obama and Rogers’ idea that news should be calibrated by the government to ease the job of the U.S. military makes for a First Amendment loophole you could drive a motorized regiment through. If al-Qaida and its supporters are more irate with the United States this week than they were last week, it’s because U.S. commandos killed Bin Laden. Obama should never have marked him for death if tending the “sensitivities” of al-Qaida and its allies was U.S. policy.

It’s hard to imagine that a death photo of Bin Laden would elevate al-Qaida and its supporters to some fury that his killing didn’t. Or, as @knifework tweeted this afternoon, “Who hasn’t shot someone in the face, fed their corpse to the sharks, and then fretted over how their followers would feel about the photo?”

I don’t advocate the photos’ release because I think it will convince the unconvincible that Bin Laden is dead or because I desire a “trophy” or a football “spiked,” as Obama puts it in his 60 Minutes interview. I’m for the publication of the pictures because they’re an essential part of the war on al-Qaida. Withholding the photos and couching their suppression in the name of national security misjudges what makes al-Qaida tick and infantilizes the nation. It also sets a precedent for “news that’s too gruesome to reveal.”

Here’s how CBS News reporter David Martin describes the photos, based on a description provided to him:

It does sound very gruesome. Remember, bin Laden was shot twice at close range, once in the chest and once in the head, right above his left eye, and that bullet opened his skull, exposing the brain, and it also blew out his eye. So these are not going to be pictures for the squeamish.

Barbie Zelizer, author of the recent book About To Die: How News Images Move the Public, finds it paradoxical that the administration would recoil from releasing the photos but gladly provides verbal descriptions of the spectacular raid and Bin Laden’s killing.
